Candle Care

CANDLE CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Please read and follow all provided candle care instructions and adhere to the warning label and instructions. Failure to do so could result in a fire hazard or injury. Keep candles out of reach of children and pets. Do not burn candles on or near anything that can catch fire. Place the candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface, and avoid exposure to drafts. Never leave a burning candle unattended.

WHY SOY, AND PLANT-BASED WAX?

Soy, and plant-based wax are entirely renewable and free of harmful substances released into the air when burning. Our hand-poured candles use clean soy, and plant-based wax, which is biodegradable and vegan-friendly. The chemicals normally used in mass candle making are what make most candles appear perfect in colour and shape when burning. We have chosen to ethically source materials and avoid contributing to deforestation.

Soy is a living organism that continues to expand, contract and change from it’s current form. These ‘flaws’ are normal and it is a clear indicator that you have purchased a natural plant based candle. Each candle is lightly scented with beautiful subtle notes, nothing overpowering but just enough to capture your senses.

Here at Zaya, we wanted to create a natural, plant-based candle. Please remember that soy and plant-based wax are natural, not synthetic, which means they may not be 100 percent perfect in color and texture. Over time, you might notice some changes and even an uneven texture after burning the candle. The rough, uneven tops that can occur after burning a soy wax candle are a result of the hot wax in the melt pool cooling and solidifying at an inconsistent rate. This is a characteristic of soy wax and a clear indicator that you've chosen a natural product. We believe in the beauty of imperfection and will always prioritize natural over synthetic alternatives!

SAFETY AND CARE FOR YOUR CANDLE

Before lighting your candle for the first time, ensure you have 2-3 hours available for it to burn while attended. Never place your candle near anything flammable or potentially combustible. Use a candle holder designed for candle use, which should be heat-resistant and sturdy, capable of containing drips or melted wax. Place your candle on a flat, flame-retardant surface, away from drafts, children, pets, curtains, furniture, and other flammable items.

For best results, do not burn your candle for more than 2-3 hours at a time. Extinguish the flame, let it cool down, trim the wick, and then relight it. Store your candles in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, dust, and fluorescent light to prevent fading, cracking, and melting.

Pillar candles are designed to contain the wax within. When you initially light your pillar candle, allow the wax pool to reach within 0.5cm of the outer edge, then extinguish it. Repeat this step every time you burn the candle. Once the wax pool reaches 0.5cm from the edge, extinguish it to prevent spillover. Ensure that the wax pool remains free of wick trimmings, matches, and debris at all times. If a candle consistently smokes, flickers, or the flame becomes too high, extinguish it. This indicates that the candle is not burning correctly. Allow it to cool, trim the wick, and check for drafts before relighting.

COMMON ISSUES WITH SOY PILLAR CANDLES

Tunnelling: Tunnelling occurs when a pillar candle burns a hollow core, leaving a thick, unused mantle or rim. To prevent this, ensure the initial burn is long enough to melt the candle all the way to the edge. If tunnelling has occurred, you can "hug" the candle by pushing the soft wax rim towards the flame. If the tunnelling is too deep to fix by "hugging", you can trim the excess rim with a sharp knife when the wax is warm.

Note that a single-wick candle with a diameter over 10cm (4 inches) will always tunnel, as the wick won't generate enough heat to melt the wax all the way to the edge.

Smoke and Draught: While some smoke from a properly burning candle is normal, continuous smoke isn't. Continuous smoke or black marks on the container can be caused by draughts, excessively long wicks, or a wick leaning off-center. To address this, eliminate draughts, trim the wick to 6mm (1/4 inch), or adjust the wick's position.

Dripping: Dripping in soy pillar candles can be caused by various factors, including draughts, proximity to other candles, slanting candles, prolonged burn times, or excessively long wicks. You can prevent this by addressing these factors, like eliminating draughts, spacing candles at least 10cm (3 inches) apart, ensuring the candle is upright, and burning the candle for 2-3 hours during the first burn and avoiding burning for more than 3-4 hours in subsequent uses. Trim the wick to 6mm (1/4 inch) to prevent it from leaning and causing uneven melting, which may lead to the pillar's walls becoming soft and thin and potentially causing wax to drip.

CARE FOR YOUR CONCRETE PIECE

Our concrete products are made from natural, raw materials and crystals and can be flammable if placed near other candles or flammable items. Never place your concrete piece near or next to anything that can catch fire.

Concrete is an extremely strong material however will shatter if dropped on to a hard surface and corners can be chipped if care is not taken.

Handle our handcrafted concrete products with care, as they are delicate and require a little love and attention. ♡
